Mathilda Campbell

Mathilda Elizabeth “Tillie” Campbell, 87, of Stephens City, passed from this life and entered into her Savior Jesus’ arms on Friday, May 23, 2014, at the Lynn Care Center in Front Royal.

A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, May 27th, at 11:00 a.m. at Maddox Funeral Home with The Rev. Jay Kelchner officiating. Interment will follow in Prospect Hill Cemetery.

Mrs. Campbell was born November 30, 1926, in Lincoln Place, Pennsylvania, daughter of the late Clarence Edward and Bertha Magdalene Ashkettle Stelzl. She was a former member of the Happy Creek United Methodist and a current member of the Front Royal United Methodist Church. 

Mrs. Campbell was preceded in death by her first husband Melvin R. Hawes and her last husband Elmer Lee “Sam” Campbell, Sr.  Along with her parents and husbands she was also preceded in death by her infant son Donald Edward Hawes; two sisters Ilean C. Jenkins and Imogene M. “Jean” Orndorff ; one brother Louis F. “Louie” Stelzl;  one son-in-law Michael P. Sullivan; and three step-sons Elmer Lee Campbell, Jr., Ronnie Costello, and Charlie Costello.

Surviving are two daughters Deborah “Debbie” J. Martin and husband Jimmy of Front Royal, and Linda K. Sullivan of Front Royal; three sons Dennis R. “Skip” Hawes and wife Alice of Slanesville, West Virginia, Carroll O. Hawes and wife Becky of Stephens City; and Samuel L. “Sammy” Campbell of Stephens City; one step-daughter Shirley Foster and husband Danny of Linden; three sisters Ruth A. Martin and husband Kenny of Winchester, Irean Alger and husband Jimmy of Mt. Falls, and Katherine Orndorff of Strasburg; one brother Raymond Stelzl and wife Marilyn of Mt. Falls; eight grandchildren; seventeen great-grandchildren;  and three great-great grandchildren. 

The family would like to thank Dr. Jonathon Winter, Dr. Roger Westfall, Sara Lombardi, and the wonderful staff of Lynn Care for all their loving care and who treated our mom like their own. Grandma Tillie was blessed to have you care for her over the past three years of her life. May God bless each and every one of you.

Pallbearers will be Bernie Steed, Michael Michelucci, Eric Hawes, Paul Sullivan, Gary Sullivan, and Tylor Evans.

Honorary pallbearers will be Kimberly Wines, Misty Kuser, Stephanie Steed, Peter Todd Ramey, Shane Foster, and Monique Hough.

The family will receive friends on Monday from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
