Mimms, "Colleen" Obituary
Obituary Danita Colleen Mimms was born on August 24, 1957 in Washington, DC, the eldest of three children, to the late Curtis Oneal Mimms, Sr. and Emma Clarine Pennington Mimms. She joined the Mount Carmel Baptist Church in Washington, DC and was baptized at an early age. Danita loved the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and faithfully attended services and sang in the Gospel Choral Ensemble until her health no longer allowed. She received her primary education in the District of Columbia Public Schools and graduated from McKinley Technical Senior High School in 1975. Upon graduation, she attended Howard University where she studied Print Journalism. Danita began her career at the Bureau of National Affairs, Inc. (BNA) in 1981 and throughout her career she exhibited exceptional skills in creative writing and editing. In 2001 after 20 years of dedicated service, Danita ended her career at BNA as a Publishing Systems Manager. This was the prelude to her an extended illness. In 2009, Danita began her own consulting business, DCM Editorial Services where she provided editorial services to local vendors. In addition, she was an Energy and Service Broker with the ACN Company. God blessed Danita with a beautiful daughter, Erica Chenise in 1995 whom she called her “miracle baby.” Danita loved Erica immensely and made sure that she was raised knowing the Lord. In spite of her illness, Danita’s faith in God never wavered. She never complained. Her spirit throughout her illness and determination to fight an uphill battle and to live her life to the fullest in spite of, showed just where her faith lied. Danita loved her family, church family and friends. She always had a smile and hug to give. Along with her sister and brother, she was a member of the Cincinnati Mixed Bowling League. An avid Washington sports fan, Danita was a diehard Washington Redskins fan and closely followed Bullets/Wizards and Georgetown basketball. In true Mimms fashion, she enjoyed watching games and following the family tradition of analyzing, passionately arguing and yelling loudly at the television while watching. She enjoyed spending time with her family no matter the occasion whether it was a small or large gathering. Danita had an infectious smile that lit up the room and loved taking pictures, which she posted on Facebook instantly even when some were not camera-ready. In those pictures, her family and friends will have many wonderful and cherished memories of a strong, loving, kind-hearted, and faith-filled woman. She leaves to mourn her daughter, Erica Chenise; a brother, Curtis Oneal Mimms, Jr. and a sister, Larita Carol Mimms; a sister-in-law, Yvette C. Mimms; two nephews, Maurice R. Mimms and Miles X. Veals; a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, and special friends.
