Alford, Brad Obituary

Brad A. Alford, PhD, age 60, of Tanglwood Lakes, Greentown, died Friday, June 21, 2013, at Moses Taylor Hospital, Scranton. He is survived by his wife of over 30 years, the former Cheryl Higgs. Dr. Alford was a Professor of Psychology at the University of Scranton.

Born May 1, 1953, in Progress, MS, he was the son of Marilyn (Jackson) Alford of Progress and the late C.A. Alford, Jr.

Dr. Alford completed his doctorate in Clinical Psychology for the University of Mississippi and a post-doctoral fellowship at the Center for Cognitive Therapy at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine.

Dr. Alford's previous positions include Visiting Assistant Professor, Department of Psychology at the University of Kentucky; consultant to the U.S. Postal Service (as an associate of Jordan and Associates, Toronto); program consultant for the Cognitive Therapy Program of Charter Ridge Psychiatric Hospital in Lexington, KY; Clinical Director of the Northwest Tennessee Mental Health Center, Inc., Martin, TN; and Program Director of the Intensive Rehabilitation Program, Western Mental Health Institute in Tennessee.

He was a founding fellow of the Academy of Cognitive Therapy and a lifetime member of the Association for the Scientific Study of Consciousness. He was the author of The Integrative Power of Cognitive Therapy, Scientific Foundations of Cognitive Theory of Depression, and Depression: Causes and Treatment, 2nd Edition.

In addition to his wife and mother, he is survived by a son: Jason Alford of New York City; a sister: Susan Moore of Mississippi; three brothers: Gary Alford of Colorado, John Alford of Florida and Richard Alford of Mississippi; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Ronnie Alford.

There will be a Memorial Service on Thursday, June 27, at 12:00 noon at Loyola Science Center, PNC Auditorium Room 133, University of Scranton, Scranton. Private cremation was held at Lake Region Crematory, Lake Ariel.
