Denver H. Whitsel

Denver H. Whitsel, 96, formerly of Hares Valley Road, Mapleton, PA, died at 3:04 AM, Monday, April 25, 2016 at Westminster Woods, Huntingdon, PA.

Born November 25, 1919 in Cromwell Twp., Huntingdon Co., PA, he was a son of the late Walter & Marie (Secrest) Whitsel. He was married to the former Alma L. Grissinger on November 28, 1941. Mrs. Whitsel preceded in death on January 25, 2014.

Surviving are two children, Monte A. Whitsel and wife Patricia and Marta W. Yohn and husband Eric all of Hares Valley Road, Mapleton, PA, nine grandchildren, fifteen great grandchildren and one brother, Dale Whitsel of Virginia Beach, VA. Two sons, Nelson and Dennis preceded in death and one daughter died in infancy. He was also preceded in death by three sisters, Audrey Duffy, Jean Murphy and Zella Waite Andrews and three brothers, Grover Whitsel, Ralph Whitsel and Freeman Whitsel.

Mr. Whitsel was a lifelong member of Cornelius Chapel United Methodist Church, RD, Mapleton, PA, where he had served as Sunday School Superintendent. He had also served as secretary/treasurer of the Cornelius Chapel Cemetery Association and was a member of the Mapleton American Legion.

He retired from North American Refractories, Mt. Union, PA, after 46 years service. He was also a logger and lumberman his entire life.

Mr. Whitsel was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U. S. Army in the European Theatre of Operations, operating anti aircraft weapons from 1942 through 1945.

A funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM, Thursday, April 28, 2016 at the Robert I. McClain Funeral Home, 245 Seminary St., Cassville, PA with Rev. James Thomas officiating. Interment will be made at Cornelius Chapel Cemetery, RD, Mapleton, PA. Friends may call at the funeral home 6 – 8 PM on Wednesday and one hour prior to the service on Thursday.
