Welch, Arland Obituary

Arland Courtland Fincham Welch, 85, of Flint Hill passed away on Tuesday, August 6, 2013, at her home.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. at the Flint Hill Baptist Church conducted by The Rev. Jim Payne and The Rev. William Roland Welch, Jr.

Mrs. Welch was born June 14, 1928, in Madison, Virginia, daughter of the late James Courtland and Anna Susan Jenkins Fincham.  She was married to the late William Roland Welch, Sr. for 38 years.  He passed away in 1983.

She attended Flint Hill Elementary School and Washington High School where she played basketball for the Rappahannock Rockets.  She was a supervisor and office manager for Avtex Fibers for 32 years.  She was co-author of two books, “A Journey through Flint Hill” and “The First Washington of All” with Ester Kidwell.  She worked the voting polls for 17 years in the Wakefield Precinct. She was a deacon and trustee of the Flint Hill Baptist Church.  She was a member of the Rappahannock Historical Society Board and a dedicated volunteer. She was a longstanding member of the Flint Hill Ladies Auxiliary.

Surviving are three sons Roger Allen Welch and his wife Geneva, Rev. William Roland Welch, Jr. and his wife JoAnne, and Wendell Dale Welch all of Flint Hill; five grandchildren William Ryan Welch, Courtney Welch Harrington, Eduard Welch, William R. Welch, III, and Arland Christine Elizabeth Welch; one great-grandchild Parker Roland Harrington; two sisters Garland Sealock and Mary Kay Garwood and her daughter Robin Garwood Keys; and her good friend Junior Walters.

Pallbearers will be Ralph Markee, Bobby Moore, Mike Massie, Eddie Williams, Ashby Grimsley, and Charles Sutphin.

Honorary pallbearers will be Eduard Welch, Ryan Welch, Courtney Welch Harrington, William R. Welch, III, and Elizabeth Welch.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service from 12:00 p.m. until 1:00 p.m. at the church.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Rapidan, P.O. Box 1715, Culpeper, VA  22701 or to the Flint Hill Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 150, Flint Hill, VA  22627.
