Denise LaJuan Wardlaw
October 29, 1965 - August 15, 2011
Suddenly, on Monday, August 15, 2011, Denise LaJuan Wardlaw departed this life. Denise was born on October 29, 1965 in Baltimore, Maryland to the marriage of the late Clark Andrew Wardlaw and Janice Lee Wardlaw (Howard). From that union there were two children, Denise and Damon Clark Wardlaw.
At the young age of 2, Denise astonished the Alexandria, VA community by becoming the first African American child to be named "Ms. Park Fairfax." Denise attended Alexandria schools and graduated from T.C. Williams in 1987. She continued her education at Hampton University and Norfolk State University. In an effort to follow her passion for helping others, Denise received a Certification as a Nursing Assistant from Northern Virginia Community College in Alexandria, VA and had been a private duty nurse for over 20 years.
In 1978, Denise eventually became the oldest of five siblings after the marriage of her mother to Attorney Robert E. Howard, Sr. Denise accepted Christ in 1987 at Breath of Life Seventh Day Adventist Church in Ft. Washington, Maryland and later transferred her membership to Community Praise Center Seventh Day Adventist Church, Alexandria, VA. She is also a lifetime member of the Alexandria Chapter of the NAACP.
Denise was a hard-working woman who thoroughly enjoyed writing poetry, listening to gospel and jazz and spending time with her family and friends. She had an infectious laughter and giving heart that touched everyone around her.
Denise Wardlaw is survived by her mother, Janice Lee Howard, her step-father, Robert E. Howard Sr.; her grandmother, Corinne J. Dixon; four children: Ashlie L. Walker, Michael D. Crockett, Clinton N. Leach and Janice D. Leach; her four siblings: Damon C. Wardlaw, Robert E. Howard, Jr., Tasha N. Ashby (Howard) and Malyssa C. Howard; one granddaughter, Kyndalle C. Walker, nine nieces and nephews and a host of relatives and friends.
The viewing and visitation will be held on Thursday, August 25, 2011 from 10:00 a.m.* until time of service at 11:00 at Community Praise Center Seventh Day Adventist Church, 1400 Russell Road, Alexandria, VA 22301 (map, directions).
