Harry E. Smitchel

Harry E. Smitchel, Sr., 87, of Hawley, passed away October 14, 2013. The son of Raymond and Lillian (Maier) Smitchel, he was born March 13, 1926, in Hawley but moved to New York City as a young boy, still spending his summers at his Grandfather’s farm in Blooming Grove.
He was proud to serve his country in WWII as a paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne Division in campaigns in New Guinea, Leyte and the invasion of Luzon. He was awarded numerous medals including a Purple Heart. An avid sports fan, he enjoyed baseball, boxing, horse racing and trips to Atlantic City. He owned several restaurants on Long Island prior to moving back to the area where he was a self-employed realtor.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Josephine (Salzano) Smitchel, a son, Harry, Jr., and his wife, Marie, of Greentown, a daughter, Deborah Coleman, and her husband, Joseph, of Lake Ariel, two grandchildren and two great grandchildren. His quick wit and sense of humor will be missed.
