Mrs. Florence M. Schirm (nee Schillon) of Kearny died on Sunday in St. Michaels Medical Center. She was 76.
The funeral Mass will be offered on Monday, January 7 at 10:30 am in St. Stephen's Church in Kearny (map/directions). Entombment will follow in Holy Cross Chapel Mausoleum (map/directions). Relatives and friends may call in the Condon Funeral Home 684 Kearny Ave., Kearny (map/directions) on Sunday, January 6, from 2-4 & 7-9pm.
Mrs. Schirm had retired as head teller from West Hudson National Bank in Harrison many years ago. She was active in many organizations, and she was a soloist and member of the Lithuanian cultural singing groups Ruta and Zibuokles Sextet. She was also a soloist and member of the NJ Bell Choral Society.
From 1978-1984 Florence served as a member and then President of the Kearny Board of Education. She was the Jersey Journal Woman of Achievement in 1981. She was also a member of the 2nd and 4th ward Republican Club as well as a member and chairwoman of the Kearny Planning Board. On the Hudson County level she served as an election judge and as a committeewoman.
She belonged to the Social Security Sweethearts and the Lyndhurst Ladies bowling leagues; as well as the Knights of Lithuania Council #90. Florence was a longtime member of the Arlington Woman's Club EMD.
Predeceased by her husband of 51 years, Matthew J. Schirm, Sr. she leaves behind her beloved children Susan Schirm Teschke (William), Matthew J. Schirm, Jr. (Cynthia), Mark M. Schirm (Donna) and Heidi Schirm Melnick. Also surviving are her sister, Rosemarie Schillon Carney and her grandchildren Michael, Matthew, Kaitlyn, Samantha, Steven, Alyssa and Thomas.
