Rideau, Matthew Obituary

On Oct. 18, 2013, Matthew Rideau, 67, peacefully departed this life at 11:25 a.m. surrounded by his children and loved ones.

A lifelong resident of Lake Charles, La., he received Christ at an early age by baptism at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. He later became a member of St. Henry’s Catholic Church where he was an usher at the 5 p.m. Mass on Sunday evenings, and he was also a Knight of Peter Claver No. 168.

He was born to Joseph E. and Elmira T. (DeVille) Rideau Sr. on Sept. 11, 1946. He later married Mary Ledet Rideau on June 5, 1965, and to this union one child was born, a daughter, Rachel. He and Mary later divorced and he had a son, Matthew Germode, with his second wife, Ruth Simon Rideau. They were married on April 30, 1989, until their divorce.

He was employed by Schlesinger Wholesale from the young age of 11 years until the time of his passing. He began working for Mr. Anthony Fertitta Sr. until he passed the company on to his son, Anthony Fertitta Jr. in 2003. He and his co-worker Craig Gerard worked together for 43 years so they were able to read each others mind by just looking at one another. They knew what each one needed without saying a word. The three of them had a very special relationship and he will be truly missed, but his spirit will be with them always. He was also employed by the Isle of Capri for 13 years when he retired in October of 2011.

In his early years, he belonged to the Round Robin Bowling League at the Greinwich Bowling Alley on Highway 14 that closed in May of 2011. He bowled on three teams that sponsored them; the first was the Oasis Lounge, followed by Combre’s and last but not least, Jessie’s House of Flowers. He was a very good bowler.

His favorite things to do were spending time with his grandchildren, playing dominoes and video poker, and please let us not forget watching his Westerns.

He leaves to cherish his loving memories one daughter, Rachel Rideau (Lyman R.) Walker III of Lake Charles, La.; one son, Matthew Germode Rideau and one stepdaughter, Keesha R. Byrd, both of Iowa, La.; three grandchildren, Donovan M. (Cherrelle) McKay of Monroe, La., Dylan T. McKay of Lake Charles, La., and Tramya J. Rideau of Iowa, La.; six step-grandchildren, Brittany A., Andre’ N. and Danielle N. Walker all of Lake Charles, La., Gerald D. (Kristian) Byrd, of Lake Charles, La., Kyanu’ R. and Kameisha R. Byrd of Iowa, La.; also six stepgreat-grandchildren, Shaylen N. and Selah A. Walker of Lake Charles, La., JeVaun R. Yokum of Lake Charles, La., De-Yonate’ and Devon Byrd of Lake Charles, La., and Khiante’ Byrd of Iowa, La.

Also left to mourn his departure, yet cherishing his memories are his mother, Elmira Theresa DeVille of Lake Charles, La.; two sisters, Ruby M. Rideau of Houston, Texas, and Gwendolyn A. Rideau (Joseph) Hardy Sr. of Sulphur, La.; three brothers, Roger (Susan) Rideau of Houston, Texas, Donald J. Rideau of Sulphur, La., and Joseph E. (Sheila) Rideau Jr. of Lake Charles, La.

Four godchildren, Pamela Broussard, Michelle Jean Paul, Jamie Simon and Al Prejean. He also leaves a host of nieces, nephews other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, Joseph E. Rideau Sr.; and brother, Murray J. Rideau.

Visitation will be 6 p.m.– 9 p.m. Friday, Oct. 25, in Combre Funeral Home. Funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 26, in St. Henry Catholic Church.
