Raser, Walter Obituary

Walter W. Raser, 88 of Milford, died Sunday, July 19, 2015 at Bon Secours Community Hospital in Port Jervis, NY.

He was born February 18, 1927 in Layton. NJ to Bertha (Hotalen) Raser and Oren J. Raser.

He attended school in Layton, NJ in a one-room schoolhouse, along with his brothers, and later graduated from Newton High School in Newton, NJ in 1945.

Walt enlisted in the U.S. Army following his graduation, and was a WW II combat Veteran, having served in Germany, England, France, and Switzerland. He attained the rank of Corporal prior to discharge. Although he never talked about it, he received several citations and medals, and was proud to truly be one of America’s “Greatest Generation.”

On December 26, 1947 he married Emily B. Travis in Branchville, NJ. Unfortunately, she pre-deceased him on June 12, 2003 which was a loss from which he never fully recovered. They were married nearly fifty-six years at the time of her death.

He worked as a butcher in Milford at both the former Metz Ice House and Heater’s Market. In 1968 he began another career at the Us Post Office in Milford, where he later retired in 1992 after twenty four years of service.

Walt was an avid walker, a volunteer at Bon Secours Hospital, and a gardener who truly had a “green thumb.” He was a Life Member of the Milford Volunteer Fire Department, a member of the Pike County Chapter #2259 National Association of Retired Federal Employees, as well as being associated with other groups. He was a member of the Protestant faith.

He is survived by his son, Keith W. Raser (Helen), of Shohola, PA; two grandsons, Ryan H. Raser (David) of Katy, TX and Kyle O. Raser, of Davenport, FL. He is further survived by two brothers, Ralph, of Layton, NJ and Roger, of Poinciana, FL. Additional Survivors are several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Family will receive friends at Stroyan Funeral Home, 405 W. Harford St., Milford, PA on Thursday, July 23, 2015 from 1PM to 4PM and 6PM to 9PM. A service will be held at the funeral home on Friday, July 24, 2015 at 11AM with Reverend Keith Raser officiating.

The Family would like to thank Belle Reve Assisted Living and Bon Secours Community Hospital for their compassionate care, as well as faithful friends and neighbors who visited him often, especially August Metz.
