Dorothy Jean Porter
March 12, 1953 - April 13, 2011
On Wednesday April 13, 2011, Dorothy Jean Porter suddenly departed this life at Alexandria Hospital. She was preceded in death by her mother, Mrs. Willie Mae Parker, and her brother, KB Parker. Dot leaves to cherish her memory, her aunts, Georgia M. Porter and Emma R. Woods; brother Willie J. Parker; sisters; Evangelist Ethel McDonald, Georgia Peterson, Lula Robinson, Beverly Woolard, and Jackie Porter; brother-in-law Rev. Robert R. Woolard, many nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends.
Dorothy was born on March 12, 1953, in Greenwood, Mississippi. “Dot”, as she was called, was the fifth of eight children. She began her early education in the Greenwood Mississippi Public School system, however at age eleven, her family relocated to Alexandria, Virginia so she completed her studies in the public schools system there. Dorothy joined Mount Jezreel Baptist Church at an early age and was actively involved in both the choir and usher board up until her passing. Her adult life was spent working as a private home healthcare provider.
Dot was warm, loving, and kind and would do anything for anyone she met. She was a good hearted person but when challenged would passionately defend whatever she believed. Throughout childhood and as an adult, Dot’s colorful personality and antics brought a lot of laughter and much discussion. Dorothy was truly loved by her family and friends and will be sorely missed.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, April 20, 2011 at Mt. Jezreel Baptist Church, 317 North Payne Street, Alexandria, Virginia (map, directions), from 10:00 A.M. until time of service at 11:00. Interment, Bethel Cemetery, Alexandria, Virginia (map, directions).
