Vernon O. "Red" Pederson, 93, of Linden, VA, died on Thursday, November 13, 2014 at Page Memorial Hospital in Luray, VA.

Red was born May 14, 1921 in Churchbridge, Saskatchewan, Canada, son of the late Otto Bernard Pederson and Annie Eliza Jane Pageant Pederson. His childhood was spent in New Richmond, Wisconsin and Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Red was a very proud veteran. He enlisted in the Minnesota Army National Guard, Company C 135th Infantry in 1940, completed basic training at Camp Claybourne, Louisiana, and was later accepted to Officers Training School and promoted to 1st Lieutenant Infantry in the United States Army. Red completed various special military training in artillery, infantry, air and missile defense, motor transport and maintenance, and even cavalry in the last group of soldiers to train with horses and mule packs at Ft. Reilly Cavalry School, Kansas. His active service included the European Theatre in Northern Ireland, American Defense in Alaska, and the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre in The Aleutians, China, Burma, and India. He felt the highlight of his military career was in Ledo, Assam, India, where he met his beloved Army nurse and future wife, Henrietta Swortz. Postwar, Red returned to the Army National Guard attaining the grade of Captain, Artillery, in New York State.

Red was employed in the railroad industry for over 30 years with the Lehigh Valley Railroad, Pennsylvania Railroad, Penn-Central, and Amtrak, beginning his career as a telegrapher and retiring as a corporate manager. He loved spending time with his family. He enjoyed carpentry, building golf clubs, taking vacations with relatives and friends, which usually involved fishing and golfing. Red was outgoing, friendly, caring and sincere in all his relationships, and quite a storyteller! He was a member of the V.F.W. and Front Royal Country Club.

Red was married to the late Henrietta Mary Pederson. Surviving are two children Daniel Vernon Pederson and his wife Helen Bentley of Marlinton, WV and Mary Anne Pederson and her husband Allen Padovano of Morrisville, PA; one sister Beverly Pederson; three grandchildren Daniel B. Pederson and his wife Evelyn J. Pederson, Jeanna Marie Padovano and her husband Brian Koslosky, and Angelene Mary Padovano; and one great-grandson Noah Sage Pederson; and his special friend and caregiver, Kathleen McCormick of Luray, VA.

A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, November 18, at 2 p.m. at the Maddox Funeral Home conducted by Rev. Jack Keep. Burial will follow in Panorama Memorial Gardens with military honors. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, one hour prior to the service, from 1 - 2 p.m. at the funeral home.
