Paulson, Lyle Obituary

Lyle Louis Paulson, 71, of Alexandria, Virginia, died Monday, 23 September, 2013, after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.

Lyle was born to the late Louis and Wilma Paulson on Jan. 31, 1942, in Mitchell, South Dakota. He was raised in Vancouver, WA and spent memorable summers at a family ranch in Alberta, Canada. Lyle graduated from Evergreen High School, Vancouver, WA and enlisted in the US Air Force in 1960. While stationed in France, he was introduced on the telephone to Suzanne Valerie Smith of Leicester, England. He traveled to England to meet her and thereafter they were married for almost 49 years.

Lyle worked in public affairs during the 24 years he served in the USAF. He was stationed overseas for much of his career, writing for military newspapers, supporting the Armed Forces Network and handling communication and media events. He earned a BS from Southern Illinois University in 1983. Following retirement from the USAF, Lyle went on to build a second 27 year career as a Logistics Engineer. He earned two Master's Degrees, in Management and Logistics Engineering and became a Certified Professional Logistician. He also earned certifications in Defense Acquisition and Applied Project Management. Lyle worked in California and Florida for contractors supporting NASA and moved to the Washington DC area in 1995 to manage logistics at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. He progressed to positions at the FAA, Homeland Security and the Department of Defense. Lyle finally retired in January, 2012.

A member of SOLE - The International Society of Logistics for over 25 years, he served at all levels, and was awarded their Distinguished Service Medal in 2010. He loved to travel and took a number of domestic and international trips with his wife and children throughout their lifetime together. Over the last 15 years he became an avid golfer and enjoyed being a member of a local league. Lyle loved dogs and was instrumental in adding beloved canine companions to the family through the years. A devoted husband, father and grandfather, Lyle could always be relied upon to lend a helping hand. He loved family gatherings, watching football games and movies with his children and grandchildren and was known for his kidding and sense of humor. He will be profoundly missed by those that love him.

Lyle is survived by his wife, Suzanne and their two children, Lynda Paulson Brehany and David Paulson.
