Emil L. Merusi, 92 of Montague, NJ passed away at home on Sunday, April 9, 2017.
Born on April 5, 1925 in Manhattan, NY to parents Dominick and Anna Merusi, Emil grew up in Woodcliff Lake, NJ. He served his country with the U.S. Navy Seabees from 1943 to 1946.
During his time in the service, Emil met his wife Mary Jane Wiegert in Florida. The two settled in Woodcliff Lake, NJ where they raised their two sons, Emil (“Butch”) and Fred Merusi. A lifelong sportsman, Emil moved the whole family up north to Montague, NJ where he could hunt, fish and trap with his two sons.
Emil and Jane ran the Village Service Station, Montague, NJ from 1957-1967. He then went to welding school and later worked as a fitter-welder on nuclear power plants as a member of the Local 24 Union, Newark NJ. Emil chose to work the night shift so he could go goose hunting in the morning.
Emil was a member of the Shohola Rod & Gun Club, 206 Hunting Club and the Montague Hunting Club for many years.
After retirement, Emil was famous for growing and selling Shitaake mushrooms. His house with Jane on River Rd. was always a place where family and friends gathered for holidays and celebrations. Summertime parties by the pool were a highlight of their household. He will be truly missed by his family and friends.
Survivors include his two sons; Butch and Fred, three granddaughters; Rachel, Rebecca and Sarah Merusi. Emil was predeceased by his wife Mary Jane in 2013 and his grandson Dominick Emil Merusi in 2000.
Visitation will be held on April 19, 2017 from 3 to 7 PM at Stroyan Funeral Home, 405 W. Harford Street, Milford, PA 18337.
