Joseph A. Martin of Shohola, Pennsylvania passed away at home on Thursday, July 12, 2018. He lived 92 years and 10 months to the day.

The son of the late Joseph J. and Mary (Kredlo) Martin, he was born on September 12, 1925 in Duryea, PA. Joseph grew up in Falls, PA on the Martin dairy and vegetable farm where he worked the farm with his parents and siblings. In later years he designed and assisted building the “Barn at Glistening Pond” which was formerly the family’s dairy barn but has now been converted to host farm weddings and remains with his brother’s family to this day.

Joseph began boxing in PA and, although he was exempt from the draft as a farmer, he enlisted and served the Army of the United States Company C – 311th Infantry division where he fought in combat on the front lines of World War II in Germany. During the war, Joseph also boxed in Europe and continued boxing in the USA including a bout in Madison Square Garden and remained undefeated throughout his career.

After receiving honorable discharge with several medals and returning home from the war, Joseph moved to New Jersey where he became a developer and builder of many
residential and commercial properties spanning throughout 5 counties in NJ. He employed over 200 men and women at any one time via his various construction companies. He met his wife, Patricia (Hayes) formerly of Elizabeth, NJ. He resided in Union County, NJ for over 50 years and retired to his wooded retreat known as Forest Acres in Shohola, PA.

He was an accomplished golfer, hunter, fisherman and sailor. Most of all, he thoroughly enjoyed spending time with his family and many friends.

Joseph leaves behind his wife Patricia Martin; children, Diane Greeley and husband James, Roxanne Martin, Jo-Ann Buckholtz and husband Scott, Liza J. Martin and husband Joseph Garrubbo, Joseph J. Martin and wife Alison and Deborah Russell and husband Brian; siblings, Marion Franko, Anna Mae Davidson and Bernard Martin and his wife Christine; 5 grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren; brother-in-law, Robert Hayes and many nieces and nephews. Joseph was preceded in death by his daughter Marianne Martin; sister, Dorothy Kenia; in-laws, Jeanette and Robert Hayes and brothers-in-law, Anthony “Tunchy” Kenia, Donald Davidson, Gerald Hayes and Jack Franko.
