Lewis, Nathaniel Obituary
We come together to celebrate and rejoice in the heavenly home going of our beloved father, grandfather, brother, and uncle. On Wednesday, April 29, 2020 Nathaniel completed his earthly journey and walked on to meet his creator. Nathaniel “Nay” Lewis, son of the late Lucille Lewis began his life journey on April 19,1953 in Rocky Mount, North Carolina. At an early age, he and his 5 siblings relocated to Washington, DC where he was educated in the DC Public School System. Nathaniel received his high school diploma from Western High School (now known as Duke Ellington School of the Arts) and went on to become a great pillar in his family and community. Nathaniel was mild-mannered, lovable and kind-hearted. He loved, adored and treasured his children, grandchildren, brothers, sisters, and other family members. As a young boy he learned to work hard, be resourceful and above all else “take care of family”. His genuine care and compassion for others was unmatched, as anyone fortunate to know/meet him surely recognized. Nathaniel, along with his brothers and sisters led his family by example, forming a family alliance that galvanized our families and taught generations (both present and future) what true family is -- he was a servant of the Lord, as he truly helped everyone!! Nathaniel, a renowned “handyman” in his own right, began his career as a Mechanical Technician at the Sidwell Friends School where he was responsible for an inventory of vehicles, equipment and facility infrastructure totaling over $2M. His oversight and maintenance directly impacted and supported all staff and students alike. Countless students, children of Presidents (most recently the Obama’s), Congressmen, Governors, and other dignitaries alike, all adored him. Upon his retirement in July 2019, Nathaniel was honored by the Sidwell Friends School for his distinguished 40+ year career and noteworthy contributions in shaping the minds of this great nations future leaders. Nathaniel is preceded in death by his brother Willie L. Lewis and sister Kaysomia L. Lewis. He leaves to cherish his memories his sons Nathaniel M. Smith (Felicia W.) and Jonathan Smith, sisters Daisy L. Ellis and Angeline Mitchell, brother Willie R. Lewis, four grandchildren, a great granddaughter, and host of family, friends and community whom he loved dearly.
