September 2, 2012
Gladys May Johnson was born on August 13, 1927, in Richmond, Virginia to the late Wilbert and Gertrude Johnson. She was educated in the public schools of Richmond.
In the early 1950’s, Gladys moved to Washington, D.C., where she was employed at the Federal Housing Administration which later became Housing and Urban Development. Gladys received many awards and certificates of her excellent performance. She retired on June 4, 1986.
On June 14, 1958, she married the apple of her eye, James A. Powell who was a member of Gethsemane Baptist Church, Washington, D.C. They had been married for 36 years when he went home to be with the Lord in 1994.
Gladys was baptized at an early age in Richmond, Virginia. As a spiritual woman, she united with the Rock Creek Baptist Church, Washington, D.C. Not having a driver’s license, she was dependent upon her husband and friends, such as Willie Gibson, to take her on her errands, appointments and to church. When no one was available, she would take public transportation early Sunday mornings to ensure she would arrive in time for church service. She was a faithful member until her health declined.
She leaves to cherish her memory, her goddaughter, Pamela King Smith; niece, Roxanne (Tim) Wolf; nephews, Ronald (Rose) and Lloyd (Frances) Johnson; sisters-in-laws, Geraldine Hurt, Deloris Lipscomb, Michelle Powell and Mattie Powell of Roanoke, Virginia; Jean Lightburn of Detroit, Michigan; brother-in-laws, Francella Powell of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and Donald Powell of Roanoke, Virginia; life-long special friends, Roberta Redmond, Sammie Guest, Beatrice Bumbry and Gloria King; special god-nieces, Sabrina (Eric) Joyner and Diane (Lamont) Baxter; special god-nephew Ronald Guest and a host of many other relatives and friends.
