Horrigan, Gwyneth Obituary

Gwyneth Mary Horrigan, 66, passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by family on Monday, August 20, 2013.

Gwyneth, affectionately known as “Winnie,” was born and raised in Wales, Great Britain. She met her husband Peter skiing in Vermont. The two quickly fell in love and raised their family in Severna Park, Md.

Most dear to her heart was her family. She was a devoted wife, loving mother and doting grandmother. She is survived by her husband Peter, her two sons, Robert (Christina) and John (Jennifer), her brothers Graham and John Morris, sister Lowry Owen, and three grandchildren, Riley, Berkeley and Brooklyn. She was preceded in death by her mother, Betty Morris, father Myrick and sister Joan Spaulding.

An avid athlete, Gwyneth, could be found dominating the tennis courts and golf course at Chartwell Country Club, where she remains the only person to win the Women’s Singles, Doubles and Mixed Doubles Tennis Championship, as well as the Golf Championship in the same year. Gwyneth made 4 “hole in ones” during her golfing days. If “Winnie”, was not playing, she was teaching and coaching. A Certified Tennis Professional, she spent many summers teaching countless young players for the community of Ulmstead in Arnold, Md.

Gwyneth was an animal lover, rescuing countless stray dogs, cats and any other animal that may have needed help. Gwyneth possessed a personality that was as unique as her Welsh accent, a big practical joker who could bring a smile to anyone’s face, even in the worst of times.

A memorial celebrating her life, led by Gwyneth’s friend and Chaplin Susan Kelly, will be held at the Chartwell Country Club on September 11, at 2 PM. A reception will follow immediately, also at Chartwell. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Mid-Atlantic German Shepard Rescue: P.O. Box 353, Mt. Airy, MD 21771 and/or The Hospice of the Chesapeake: Philanthropy Department, 445 Defense Highway, Annapolis, MD 21401. Condolences may be left in Gwyneth’s online guestbook at: www.
