Frances E. Hopkins
October 3, 2013
It can be fairly said that Frances Elizabeth Hopkins was never at a loss for words, always ready for a cup of fresh coffee, and forever making sure that visitors to her home were constantly entertained and exceptionally well fed; whether they wanted to be or not.
Born in the early summer of 1929 to Steve and Mary Hlavacek, Fran attended Bullock Creek schools, though according to her, only after doing all of her morning chores, along with her sisters, Mary (Jim Allen) and Emily (Rich Lavier). After marrying Lauren Hopkins, she gave birth to five children, Jeanie (Brian Hepinstall), Pat (Jim Smazenka), Michael, (Carol Hopkins) Nick (Linda Hopkins) and Eric. Despite what she often told them, they are all relatively certain that they were in fact not bought at the clearance table at Sears and Roebuck.
Well known on the Rummage Sale circuit of Midland, it was not unusual for those around her and her sisters to wonder exactly what was being said about them, as they spoke quickly and quietly in their native Bohemian.
As her children grew and her life changed, Fran worked at the old local Chat & Chew Restaurant, followed by a long, happy and well respected career as part of the Midland Hospital family, where she eventually retired.
Much to the chagrin of the other Grandma’s in the family Fran was known by her grandchildren and great grandchildren as “Pretty Grandma”, or Grandma Sammy (after her beloved Pomeranian) and by all others, for her perpetual smile and unique sense of humor. Her home was a warm, loving place where friends and family were always welcome and often present, sitting at the dining room table, enjoying one of her famous cheese balls, baked beans, ham and of course the well stocked candy drawer. Never one to shy away from a healthy debate, or a quick witted and (mostly) friendly debate, the discussions at her table were long, sometimes loud, but always fun and entertaining.
Preceded in death by her parents and son Eric, and following a difficult year, Fran passed away quietly on October 3, 2013, surrounded and very much loved by her surviving children.
She will be sorely missed by her grandchildren, David (Angela) Dauer, Susan Dauer (Westley)(Charlie Glenn),Collin Hepinstall, Guy (Laura)McLaughlin, Jamie (Ryan) Hockstra, Tony (Tina) Smazenka, Alex (April) Hopkins, Melissa Hopkins, William Hopkins, Jason Hopkins and Jenifer Hopkins. Her great grandchildren include; Madison Dauer-Howell, Z-Michael Westley , Westin Westley, Nicholas and Samual Dauer, Max McLaughlin, Ava and Ella Lindgren, Ryan Hallman, Lena Smazenka, and Gavin Hockstra. She will also missed by her loving sisters ; Mary Allen and Emily LaVier as well as many long time friends.
According to her very firmly stated wishes, there will be no viewing or memorial services. There will however, be a celebration of her life welcoming all family and friends at the Midland Berryhill American Legion Post on Hedgewood Drive, Monday, October 7, 2013 from 12:00 noon to 2:00 PM. Those wishing to honor her life and memory are encouraged to contribute to her favorite institutions, MidMichigan Stratford Village Nursing Home, the Pardee Cancer Center, or the Chippewa Nature Center.
