Hess, John Obituary

John Cloyd “Curly” Hess, 96, formerly of Three Springs, PA, passed away Sunday, November 13, 2016 at the James E. Van Zandt VA Medical Center, Altoona, PA. Mr. Hess was born on June 7, 1920 to the late John Hess and Jessie Estella (Swartz) Hess in Three Springs, Pa. He was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Isabelle (Walker) Hess, a brother, Charles Wayne Hess and a sister, Dolores Hess Risher. He is survived by two nephews, Robert Hess and David Hess and two nieces, Patty Vaughn and Susan Risher.

John was a graduate of Saltillo High School, Class of 1939. After graduation, John was employed by North American Refractories in Three Springs, the Coal Mines in Broad Top City and Westinghouse Air Brake Company in Wilmerding, Pa. John was united in marriage to the former Isabelle Walker on October 11, 1943 at the Saltillo Methodist Church.

John volunteered for military service in the Army Air Corps in January 1942. He was a member of the 358th Bomb Squadron of the 303rd Bomb Group, the Hell's Angels, of the 1st Bomber Division based at Molesworth, England. While returning from mission # 12, on April 22, 1944, John's plane, a B-17, was shot down over Belgium. He was taken prisoner by the German Government and was a prisoner in the famed German prisoner of war camp, Stalag 17B, in Krems, Austria. John was liberated on May 3, 1945 by General George S. Patton's 13th Armored Division of the 3rd Army, after a 280 mile forced march across Austria.

After WWII, John was employed by the United States Postal Service until his retirement in 1980.  John was an avid golfer, gardener and sports enthusiast.

He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, Post # 89 in Clarksville, Tennessee and a 50 year member of the Murat Shriners in Indianapolis, Indiana. John was a member of the American Legion Country Club in Mount Union, Pa. and a member of American Legion Post # 578 in Rockhill Furnace, Pa. John was also a member of the Caterpillar Club, an association of people who have successfully used a parachute to bail out of a disabled aircraft.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM, Wednesday, November 16, 2016 at the Martin R. Brown Funeral Home, 565 Ridgley St., Orbisonia, Pa with Pastor Todd Griest officiating. Interment will be made at Three Springs Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home one hour prior to the service on Wednesday.

Cromwell lodge #572, Orbisonia, Pa will conduct a masonic funeral service at 11:00 AM, Wednesday, at the funeral home.
