Gigliotti, Alice Obituary

Alice Gigliotti, a 51-year resident of Fairfax, Virginia, passed away in the early morning hours of January 15, 2014 as the result of complications from a fall at home. She was 82.

The youngest of three children, Alice was born on June 13, 1931 in Brooklyn, New York, and attended Midwood High School, where she graduated in June 1949. Pursuing her interest in French, she enrolled in a six-week program at McGill University in Montreal in the summer of 1949 prior to matriculating at Ohio Wesleyan University that fall.

Alice spent her junior year of college studying abroad, at the Sorbonne, where she earned a certificate and learned to enjoy the many cultural and artistic attractions of Paris. It was also there, in December 1951, that she met the love of her life, Joseph Gigliotti.

After graduating in 1953 with a double-major in English and French, Alice took a job at Chase Bank in Manhattan and married Joseph in November 1954. The couple then moved to Arlington in March 1956, where Alice found a job at the CIA.

In 1964, Alice retired from professional life to devote herself to her husband and children full-time, a vocation she pursued with vigor, energy, and grace for the rest of her life.

Alice never lost her love of travel. She and Joseph made extended trips to Europe in 1961, 1968, and 1970. She enjoyed domestic trips with the family to see the many beautiful sights of Virginia, as well as journeys up the coast to New Hampshire and Maine. After Joseph retired, the couple made eight cross-country road trips to explore the wonders of the American West.

Alice is survived by her husband of nearly sixty years, Joseph, her daughter Barbara, and her son Christopher. All those who knew her will miss her ready smile and her sweet, self-effacing nature.

A viewing has been scheduled for Friday, January 24, 2014, from 6 to 8 P.M., and again on Saturday, January 25, 2014, from 12 to 1 P.M., at the Fairfax Memorial Funeral Home (www.fmfh.com), 9902 Braddock Road, Fairfax, VA, (703) 425-9702.
