John J. Flaherty, Jr., 81, of Dingmans Ferry, PA passed away peacefully at home on June 18, 2011. He was a retired serviceman and mechanic for Pitney Bowes, Manhattan and Wilkes Barre, PA and upon his retirement was a toll collector for Dingmans Choice Bridge for 15 years. Mr. Flaherty was a member of St. Vincent DePaul Church, Milford, PA, a Charter Member of Early Ford V8 Club of America, an antique car enthusiast and served in the National Guard with the Fighting 69th Regiment, NY for 8 years.  He was instrumental in the foundation of Birchwood Lakes Community Association in Dingmans Ferry, PA.  He served as President of the Board of Directors.

Everyone who knew him admired his kind, gentle ways and quick wit.  Endearingly eccentric with a love for animals, our beloved husband, father, and grandfather was respected and loved by all.  He will be greatly missed and never forgotten.

The son of the late John J. and Jane (Anderson) Flaherty he was born May 20, 1930 in Brooklyn, NY. He was married to Janet (Murphy) Flaherty on June 4, 1960 in Brooklyn, NY.
            
Survivors include his wife; son Scott Flaherty of Dingmans Ferry, PA; three daughters Julie Flaherty of Dingmans Ferry, PA, Lynda Murray and her husband Kent of Dearborn, MI, Karen DeVilliers and her husband John of Dingmans Ferry, PA; sister Marilyn Kerrigan and her husband George of Wading River, NY; sister-in-law Margo Ehlers and her husband Tom of Lewisville, NC; seven grandchildren Eric Simko and his wife Alysha, Steven Solferino, Brett Solferino, Dustin DeVilliers, Alexandra DeVilliers, Christopher DeVilliers, Sean Murray and one great grandson Xavier Simko.
            
Friends may call at Stroyan Funeral Home, 405 West Harford St., Milford, PA (map, directions) on Thursday, June 23, 2011 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 PM.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Vincent DePaul Church, Milford, PA (map, directions) on Friday, June 24, 2011 at 10 AM with Rev. Paul Mullen officiating.
            
Burial will take place in Delaware Cemetery, Dingmans Ferry, PA at the convenience of the family.
