Mark Allen Carter, 68, of Front Royal died on Monday, March 3, 2014, in the Winchester Medical Center.

A memorial service with military honors will be held on Friday at 2 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Front Royal conducted by The Rev. Dr. R. Mark Jordon. The family will receive friends following the service in the fellowship hall of the church. Inurnment will take place at a later date in Arlington National Cemetery.

Mr. Carter was born October 6, 1945, in Washington, DC, son of the late Garnet Randolph and Lucy Elizabeth Britt Carter. He was a retired field engineer for communication companies. He was a member of the Giles B. Cook Post 53 of the American Legion.

Mr. Carter was a Vietnam veteran having served nine years in the U. S. Army. His last duty assignment was with the Headquarters and Headquarters Battery 1st Infantry Division Artillery, Fort Riley, Kansas, 5th US Army. He received the Vietnam Service Medal, the Vietnam Campaign Medal with 60 DVC, and the Good Conduct Medal, 2nd Award. He received three overseas bars.

Surviving are his wife: Patty Bryant Carter; a step-daughter: Jackie North of Front Royal and her husband Robert; a step-son: Jeffrey Mathews of Lynchburg and his wife Michele; five grandchildren: Sue Gibbs, Emily North Catron, Patrick North, Taylor Mathews, and Courtney Mathews; a great-granddaughter: Claire Catron; and an extended family of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a sister Virginia Neyer and a brother Randy Carter.
