Robert W. Carpenter, 86, of New York, NY and Milford, PA passed away peacefully from complications following a long struggle with Alzheimer’s.

He was born in Long Beach, CA on April 21st, 1931 and spent most of his childhood in Jacksonville, Illinois. He was an Eagle Scout and Order of the Arrow. He graduated from the University of Iowa and went on to Parsons School of Design. Bob served in the United States Army during The Korean War.

His extraordinary sense of style and aesthetics combined with a sharp creative intelligence propelled Bob into a career off design; working for many years on the sets of Law & Order, Saturday Night Live and numerous television commercials over a 40 year career. During a 16 year period in San Juan, Puerto Rico, he designed the lobby at the El San Juan Hotel among other projects in high end venues.

Bob was a passionate gardener and spent many happy years tending to his lush garden and spectacular landscapes at his beloved Pennsylvania country home, “Hilliehere”. He delighted in entertaining family and friends there over many decades.

He was predeceased by his siblings, Winecke, Alice and Jack. He is survived by the love of his life, Janet Connolly; his devoted partner of 39 years. He is also survived by son, Colin B. Carpenter, daughter, Elisabeth C. Carmi and husband Stefano, nephew, Marshall M. Carpenter, stepchildren Cindy C. Auth and husband David, Stephen J. Connolly and wife Deanne, Daniel S. Connolly and wife Sally and Gary T. Connolly and husband Rodnei. He had eight grandchildren; Julian Carpenter, Beatrice & Oliver Carmi, Melissa Auth, Hayler & Heather Connolly and Nicholas & Robert Connolly.

He will be missed and remembered for his generosity of spirit, love of life, and wacky sense of humor. Bob brought an original and innate sense of beauty to everything he touched and enriched the lives of his family and friends.

A celebration of his life will take place at The New York Athletic Club, New York, NY in January, 2018.
