Carney, Paula Obituary

Paula passed away suddenly and peacefully on August 12, 2013 at her home in McLean, VA, with her loving husband Jim Carney at her side.

Paula was born in Windber, PA, her mother Evelyn Floyd's hometown, while her father, Paul D. Floyd, was serving as a fighter pilot in the European theater during World War II . She grew up in Florida, Alabama, Delaware, and Virginia with her Air Force family. She graduated from Caesar Rodney High School in Camden, Delaware, and from the University of Maryland with a degree in Nutrition. She worked for more than 30 years at the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food and Nutrition Service, where she helped create and then become a senior member of the team that ran the Women, Infant & Children program, which provides assistance to low-income women and young children- including more that 50% of all infants born in America.

Paula was passionate about birds, traveling to view them, feeding them around her home, and sharing her considerable knowledge with others as a Bird House interpreter at The National Zoo. She and Jim transformed the yard at their home into a Certified Wildlife Habitat, designed by the National Wildlife Federation. She was also a curious and delighted traveler, and she and Jim explored the world together.

She had a gift for organization, liked nothing better that planning and anticipating a trip, and adored hearing about others' travels. Pictures and collections decorate her home, transporting a visitor to far away places. Just the evening before her death, Paula and Jim had returned from an European excursion.

She is survived by Jim; her sister Nancy (Marc); her stepchildren Elizabeth (Paul), Jay (Claire), and Bruce (Kristy, and by many cousins, nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and dear friends.

in lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Paula's memory to the Bird House Renovation Campaign at The National Zoo. Please make donations online at www.nationalzoo.si.edu
