Blanks, Rosie Obituary

Rosie Mae Blanks passed away May 1, 2020, after a year-long battle with cancer at her home in NW Washington. Born August 16, 1952 in Gadsden, SC to Amy (Sims) Williams and to her stepfather Jesse Williams, Rosie became the middle child between brothers, James and Eugene and younger siblings, Catherine and Tyrone. After high school, Rosie moved to the District of Columbia to continue her studies and also to help her cousin Hattie's young family take care of their baby daughter. Rosie attended DC Teachers College, now UDC, completing her bachelor's degree and later her Master’s in Early Childhood education from Trinity University. She began her career working as a teacher's aide and substitute, until assigned her first head teaching position at Lucy D. Slowe Elementary in Northeast Washington. She worked at Slowe, until it's closing, as a Pre-K and Kindergarten teacher. Moving on to Leckie Elementary didn't slow her pace or fervor for her students. Rosie was awarded her first highly effective educator award for her "unwavering commitment to educational excellence for all children” by DC public schools in September of 2010. After completing an exemplary 35 years of service in the DC public schools, she retired finally but never stopped teaching. Rosie’s retirement involved returning to help raise the next generation of her cousin Hattie's family. Rosie was pre-deceased by her mother Amy (2016), stepfather Jessie (1999) and her cousin Hattie (2003). She is survived by her siblings James (Dorothy), Eugene (Leedell), Catherine, and Tyrone; nephews Chris and Antonio; goddaughters Kelli, Kristin and Kimberly, cousins and other extended family and friends and colleagues. Due to current Coronavirus restrictions Rosie will be laid to rest at a private grave site burial at Rock Creek Church cemetery where her cousin Hattie and Artis Baldwin are also buried. A memorial gathering is planned for later this year in her home state.
