Awkard, Carolyn Obituary

Carolyn’s  Life Journey

Carolyn McCall Awkard born July 26, 1946, in Wilson, NC was the firstborn of five children born to the late Henry B. and Lucille J. McCall.  After just five years of hemodialysis, Carolyn departed this life in the early morning hours on June 28, 2020, at the University of Maryland Prince George’s Hospital Center in Cheverly, MD.  Carolyn was preceded in death by her parents Henry and Lucille, one sister, Wanda, and two brothers, Horace and Michael McCall.

Carolyn was a member of The Greater Mt. Calvary Holy Church and a graduate of Calvary Bible Institute. She loved God and she loved her church, unfortunately, her sickness limited her attendance there.

Carolyn received her early education in the Catholic schools of Holy Name Elementary.  She would complete her high school education at Eastern Highschool and earn her high school diploma from Spingarn Stay in 1965.  It was at Eastern High where she would meet and marry her highschool sweetheart Gerald LeCount Awkard, on February 16, 1965.  From this union were born, Marie, Monica, Marcella, and Kim.

Carolyn worked as a nursing assistant and worked several years at the U.S. Postal Service. In 1971, Carolyn began her career with the U.S. Department of Treasury where she worked for 32 ½ years, retiring in January 2004 as a Check Claims Analyst, in the Check Claims Branch, Financial Management Service.

Carolyn was a sweet and soft-spoken person, who loved her family and enjoyed when we would get together for family dinners and such, especially during the holidays.  She was one who enjoyed her quiet time of just watching old western movies in the peace and quiet of her home.  If pushed too far, Carolyn would sometimes have to tell it like it was. For those closest to her knew her words came from a place of love and were intended to teach a lesson.

Carolyn also was an excellent listener and often gave good advice when asked.  She would often help out those in financial need because she never wanted to see someone in need and not help them.

Over the last five years attending dialysis at the Davita Dialysis Center, in Lanham, MD she was a ray of sunshine when she would report to her shift.  Carolyn would be greeted by the staff and patients alike.  Over the years, she made many friends. However, her special friends remain Ms. Carmen, Mr. Oliver, Mr. Hicks, and Mr. Singh to name a few.

Carolyn leaves to cherish her memory her youngest sister, Gwendolyn (Gwen) McCall. Three daughters, Monica Denise Awkard, Marcella Yvette Awkard, and Kim D. Awkard-Tobias (Delonta). One Sister-in-law, Valda McCall, one niece, Rashea McCall Jackson (Andre) and one nephew, Kellen McCall, two aunts Alma Lucas and Mildred Simmons; four grandsons, Anthony, David, Markus, and Deondre; one great-granddaughter Aneese and one great-grandson Anthony; several long time friends Jean Allen, Linda Oliver, Gail Zanders, Dorothy Kelly, Brenda Smith, Jane Walker, and Hattie Cotton: along with a host of other relatives and friends.
