Richard "Abbie" Abernathy

Abernathy, Richard Obituary
RICHARD EDWARD ABERNATHY was born July 3, 1943 in Washington, DC—the second son of the late Henry Abernathy, Sr. and Lillie Mena Abernathy. He departed this earth on March 22, 2021 after a brief illness. Richard attended Prince George's County public schools and graduated from Fairmont Heights High School in 1961 as an apprentice carpenter. He was drafted into the U. S. Army in 1965 and was stationed in Augsburg, Germany as a supply specialist until his honorable discharge in 1967. Known as “Abbie” or “Biz” to his friends, Richard was an outgoing, sharp-dressing man whose favorite color was green. He loved to dance and was widely known for his smooth hand-dancing moves. Richard enjoyed singing to Motown tunes, watching cowboy movies, talking sports and politics, and reminiscing about the good old days. He also liked to cook and would share his delicious 15-bean soup with family and friends every winter. Although he watched all types of sports, Richard was a devoted Redskins fan. Richard worked for many years as a self-employed carpenter. He was well-known for his custom cabinetry and precise woodworking skills, which earned him the nickname “The Wood Man.” He continued working as a carpenter well into his 60’s until health issues forced him to retire. He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry, Sr. and Lillie Abernathy; his older sister, Wilhelmena Jefferies; and four brothers, Henry, Jr., Robert, Donald and Alan Abernathy. He leaves to mourn: one daughter, Tara Ferguson; two grandchildren; two sisters, Laura Preston and Roberta Abernathy Reid; one brother-in-law, James W. Preston, Sr.; and a host of other relatives and friends.
